Nursing Profession Overview
Nurses play a crucial role in saving and improving lives as frontline members of the healthcare delivery team. They independently assess and monitor patients, adopting a holistic approach to determine the necessary steps for patients to achieve and maintain health. Nurses provide care and, when needed, alert other healthcare professionals to assist. For example, emergency department nurses triage incoming patients, deciding the urgency of care required. They coordinate care delivery among physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers, physical therapists, and others, continually assessing the effectiveness of care and adjusting plans as necessary.
A vital aspect of nursing is patient advocacy—protecting patients' interests, especially when they are unable to do so themselves due to illness or lack of health knowledge. Nurses also serve as educators, explaining procedures and treatments, teaching patients and their families about healthy lifestyles, medication management, wound care, and the use of healthcare equipment. They empower patients, guiding them toward healthy behaviors and supporting them in times of need. As patients approach the end of their lives, nurses provide dignity in death by advocating for adequate pain management and facilitating meaningful time with family members.
Hospital nurses are responsible for discharge planning, collaborating with other health professionals to determine when patients can go home and assisting them in adapting to their conditions for full recovery. Community-based nurses work to prevent illness through education and programs designed to reduce transmissible diseases, violence, obesity, and tobacco use, and provide maternal-child education to address leading health issues.
Some nurses pursue advanced degrees (Master’s and Ph.D.) to become independent scholars, educators, health policymakers, managers, or advanced practitioners such as Clinical Nurse Specialists or Nurse Practitioners. The lamp associated with Florence Nightingale symbolizes nursing, representing the vigilance and care nurses provide to their patients. Their decisions, based on extensive education, significantly impact patient survival and well-being.
